Hey, Welcome!
My name is Mack Huerta
I’m an undergraduate illustrator and character designer based in Southern California with an associates degree from Fullerton College and I’m currently pursuing a Bachelors in Illustration!
Anyways, here’s a little glimpse into how I think!
Somethings I’m especially drawn to are seeing the small everyday behavioral tendencies that people make, ranging from a grimace in their face, how they wait in a line, how they drink or eat, and even how they hold their head, as well as, most especially how they interact with other people. I feel like seeing how a person moves and how they respond is a true sneak peek into the personality and life of who that person is.
When I’m creating and time disappears, I’m usually trying to understand what is the best way to convey the subject matter. I’m always pushing myself further and further to not just be able to tell something, but more so how to show it in a uniquely creative way, where the scene isn’t just a one dimensional moment but rather a visually clever solution for how to find a way to depict something as captivating as possible.
Things I always find myself returning to whenever I’m doing a drawing is always thinking as the subject matter of whatever I’m drawing. If it’s a person, I think into the mindset of that person; if I was them, how would I walk, how would I react if I got hurt, or how would I react to a weird smell or something gross, how would I tie my shoes, or what would I do if someone bumped me or even what would I wear to school or to work? There’s so many questions that I find myself returning to over and over every time I do a new drawing, where its not as simple as here’s what this person looks like mad, but rather how would they posture up if they were mad? Would they pout their lip or bite their lip? How would their eyebrows furrow, or what part of their faces would they scrunch, or even how would they handle their anger? Would they handle it quietly, be the type to explode, be passive about their anger or be confrontational yet stay composed?
I hope that anyone looking at my work feels the amount of thought I put behind a drawing to get to its execution, and the amount of planning it has taken. From acting out a pose or making a face in the mirror, to taking reference photos and even the deep digestion of the person’s behavior. For illustration, I hope individuals can my planning behind trying to find the most creative angle/perspective to display an idea. I just hope that someone looking at my art can make the connection to a topic on their own, or appreciate the amount of takes it had taken to get to the final piece, and if there is an emotional connection behind a concept, then I’m hoping people can definitely feel it too.
Something I’m extremely curious about for the future is what kind of concepts or projects I’ll get to take on! The reason for my excitement is because my favorite part is being able to take a raw idea and do the creative thinking to find the best visual solution, and I’m especially excited to take something new and find my own conceptual answer, whether it be for an editorial, a children’s book, or even a character!
